vienna-based producer sam irl popped up on our radar a couple of years ago following stellar releases on jazz & milk, but honestly we should have been paying far closer attention as this guy has been making the best crunchy, mpc-driven jazz-infused house music dating right back to 2006. ep�s for s3a�s sampling as an art and collaborative projects with patrick pulsinger and dusty have won him fans including gilles peterson (leading to a release on brownswood), mr scruff and session victim amongst many others. his live sets have also seen him perform at the hallowed grounds of panorama bar and sonar festival. for his debut ep here on freerange sam has delivered four tracks which perfectly showcase his production skills and knowledge of what makes a dance floor tick, kicking off with title track rain technique. quirky keys and a playful groove help build a warm and charming vibe, light and bouncy yet deep and driving enough to get your dance on to. trust follows with loping, lopsided percussion forming the basis of the groove, sparse rhodes pads punctuating the beat and adding just the right musical element to the mix without cluttering the beats or compromising the sense of space. flipping over we have all thats left which sees sam utilising his trusted tr606 for some lovely snappy snares and sizzling hihats. chiming arpeggios join the repeating chord riff creating another simple yet uplifting and playful mood which cant fail to get under your skin. closing the ep we have a wonky, shuffling house track which once again shows sam proving less is more, sampling his key elements into the mpc and jamming out the arrangement in a live and improvised way which brings a fresh, somewhat naive appeal to the production.

this album has been many years in the making. around 2005 we were gigging, playing hip hop breaks and supporting acts like krs-one and raekwon. we wrote a lot of our own material, but we never properly recorded it in a studio, we did however make lots of -one mic- recordings onto a mini-disk player. tom kept hold of all of these recordings and in 2011 send copies of everything to the rest of the band. a short list of 30 were chosen to record properly. a basic studio was booked, and recording began, initially it was pretty basic, just drums, bass & keys with guitars overdubbed the following day. with these foundation rhythm tracks tom went away and edited them, creating structure, extra layers and demo mixes. these demo mixes were used to send to mcs. it was decided to go with american mcs as the type of thing we listened to when we wrote a lot of our material was classic 90s hip hop. el da sensei & sadat x were the first to respond to our request, and soon features were flying through ever other week. we actually had enough material for 2 albums, but picked what we wanted to represent our first release and continued to develop the material, including adding session musicians for harps, brass, strings and cuts. we chose 4 tracks to create videos for and got the ball rolling with various video makers. the final year was spent mixing, sequencing and deciding on artwork. the title cinder hill is reference to where the band spent many afternoons practicing at john & joe�s parent�s house, their mum maggie passed away in 2016 and the album is dedicated to her for her endless support and love for the music.

�i�ve said it before, but dancehall and its influence on uk music has been a massive inspiration for me, going way back to hearing chris goldfinger on radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else i�d heard before. i love that fundamental rhythmic pattern, and i love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies, and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.
when it came time to build another ep for critical, i decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator rider shafique, who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me, and together create something that references both old and new dancehall, while still being playable in the kinds of sets i ve become known for. there�s no halftime and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even disciplined - and hopefully we�ve succeeded.

last year, an enigmatic name seemed to appear out of thin-air. sam weston was apparently a fresh upstart in the australian house-scene releasing a dusty collection of late-night/early-morning jams aptly titled shiraz voyager. with this rose-tinted house release in hand, weston arrived on the scene and people took notice. the tape sold out within weeks. thing was, sam weston was not a fresh-face at all. he was here all along, although more commonly known as one half of influential sydney techno duo � alba. lorded for their brand of live-fire robotic grooves, alba became trailblazers in a town more miami than berlin, where brooding and rolling hypnosis weren�t often preferred to fist pumping �bangers�. wanting to flex his lovin� spoonful of hypnotic lo-flung house, weston decided to release a handful of edits on his soundcloud. immediate attention was conjured and sam weston released the aforementioned shiraz voyager ep to a pretty amazing response. almost overnight, australia had a new hero in weston�s warm compositions that summon memories of sunny days and happier times.

much may have changed over a two-decade period, but drumcodes commitment to releasing the scenes most cutting-edge and refined techno remains resolute. with releases last year from heavy hitters such as adam beyer, alan fitzpatrick, luigi madonna, jel ford, dubspeeka and mark reeve, the label continues on in 2016 in much the same way, bringing fail-safe, club-ready music to the techno community.
